FEILDING JOCKEY CLUB'S MEETING. THE FIRST DAY. ACCIDENTS TO JOCKEYS. I 1 (BT TELEGRAPH—SrECIAI. COKItESrONDENT.) Folltling, November 29. The Feilding Jockey Club's meeting commenced to-day in fmo weather, and there was ! a record attendance. The meeting being one of the first since the passing of the Gaming Act, excited considerable interest, but the looked-for -contest between the bookmakers and the totalisator did not take place, as the former refused to pay tho fees demanded by tho Club. Tho system of closing the machine early made, a considerable dill'erenco in tho Club's income, as a'deal of nionoy was shut out on each race, liig fields were the order throughout, and there were some unfortunato accidents. M'Gregor, rider of Lull, was sent to the hospital at Palmerston North with a dislocated shoulder and spinal injuries, and M'Combe, rider of Sharkeyn in the Kiwitea Welter, was afterwards sent along in a very serious condition. The field in this race were just closing up round tho top bend,, aiid M'Combe's horse was evidently carried off its feet. Rendrock came down over tho prostrate jockey, but W. Young was not much injured. Tho same rider had a lucky escapo when llosogrovo fell\ with him near the spot last year. At the time of writing, tho Jockey Club have not held any inquiry into tho accident, but it is to bo'hoped tlley intend doing so, as those accidonts in flat races are becoming far too frequent. M'Combe had a very serious accident in Dunedin some years ago, and it is feared tho result of tho present fall will be worse oil that account. The Club's Executive should look into tho question of improved hospital accommodation on the racecourse, as the arrangements are not satisfactory in ease of accidents.' There was a largo number of racing officials from other parts, including Sir Geo. Clifford, lhe Hon. Jas. Carroll was also presont. The results aro as follow: — * FLYING STAKES. Six furlongs. Visitors from, the Wellington mail train arrived in timo to seo tho first event, which was started a' few minutes later. Toa I'uhi was again slow to get away from -the' barrier, and consequently never got near the front '. division. . Moriarty got . away" : with St. i Qlaimer,. the : lattor>on; tho.outside;'" /I'lio pair led the whole -way, and" SJ. Keid's''superiority at the finish enabled him to win by a head. Splendid Idea gave a tail - show of pace at the finish, but she did not got dangerously near' the two first horses. Uxton was close up for five furlongs, but after that lie was done with. .
The Aorangi Hack Race proved a good tiling' for Moata, who ran' to tlie front'immediately the barrier .' rose, and remained there until the finish. Houyhiilnm ran very well for six furlongs, but tailed to gain "a place. Sylvan Park got a had position, and finished nearly-last; Daisy 'Paul finished very fast, and beat Lady Disdain for. second placo. The big field in this race-was stretched but '•to-a 'great length', and none of the rear division at tho start had' hiuch chance of getting a decent position'.'-
Fourteen starters went to the post in the St. Andrew's Handicap.- Maiiiapoto was in a •grand- position throughout,' and ' when the straight was reached he something like , his old dash, and quickly disposing of Irish llifle, he won rather easily. -Irish Rifle tried to win from end to end, but-tired over the last furlong, and Moral -managed to beat liim. for second place after a' solid go up. the' straight. Riflemaid was one of the last to get away, and was unable! to improve her position till going, down tho' hack. Slie came on the outside, and finished fifth. William was nicely ridden. He was prominent throughout, and coming in to the straight looked as if he would secure'a place, but he eventually finished fourth. Frisco was going well at a mile, but dropped out as the straightwas reached.
Creusot and Kaipetipeti were scratched for tho Spring' Hurdles.; Lull unseated M'Gregor at tho first hurdle, and the jockey had his shoulder dislocated. Sen Sim led to the straight, but tho.journey was a little too far for him. Gold Dust and Asteroid were in good positions the whole way, and the former's advantage in-: tlie weights enabled him to defeat Asteroid •in -the run home. Royal JJlue, St. Albert, and Pushful showed up'at different stages, but tho two first horses had the finish to themselves.-
.Earmark was going very, well in the Vaituna Hack Hurdles, but -when , three furlongs from .home he came down. Luckily his jockey was not seriously injured. St. Amelia also fell, and H. Telford got a< nasty shaking. Showman was close behind Earmark and Liberator when. .Earmark fell, and in the run home Liberator was decisively beaten.' Dulcinea was third,' several lengths away./ ' ',
The race for tho Feilding Stakes was somewhat spoilt by the., uneven start. Fleetfoot, tho favourite, was the last to leave, and Eona was also badly left; Elevation put in his run at the eleventh hour, but it was a most convincing effort. '■ Until he appeared. on the scene it looked as if Lord Soult was going to win. Aborigine got tile best'of tho start and ran very well. Little Mary ran well for' tlireo furlongs and then closed up. Munjeet got in the middle of the field and had no chance of getting through, but it is doubtful if anything could liavo beaten Air. Bidwill's colt under different circumstances.
The Iviwitea Welter was responsible for an unfortunate accident. Shar'keyn fell with J. M'Combe, and brought down Rendrock (AY. Young), at precisely, the same spot 'whero Young fell on Rose Grove last year. iU'Oombe was pickod up unconscious, and on the doctor's'orders was'convoyed to the Palmerston North hospital. Chatterer, with G. Price in tho saddle, took tho lead at'the start, and won the whole way.
In the Fitzroy Hack Race Penates ran well for tlireo furlongs, after getting a bad start, but lie faded away before the straight was reached." The finish botween, Catapult ami Nukutiki was a good one, but otherwise the race was uninteresting.
Tho City Council hold a special meeting in conimitt.ee last night, to consider the report of the By-Laws Committee' with respect to tho various clauses of the. proposed now by-laws referred back •to the Committee by tiie Council. There were present: — The Mayor (the.Hon. T. W. Hislop), Councillors Godber,. Luke, Fisher, Morrah, Carmichael, Smith, Cohen, Ballinger, Hales, Biss, M'li&ren, and Fletcher.
