Georgetown, November 2S. • Eight convicts frorii Dfevil's ■' Island, the Frenc]i penal settlement,' arrived in a boat at British Guiana, where they terrorised the inhabitants. Eventually' they were 'arrested; , and were handed over to the Fronch authorities.
"Gypsy" Smith, the- English, eyangolist, who is specially mentioned in a recommendation from tho Wellington District Methodist Synod to Conference, that some .prominent missioner should be invited.to hold .services throughout the Dominion, is a Very .well--known figure iii the religious world at Home. Ho has been called; the greatest evangelist now living. The llev: J. Flanagan lias made enthusiastic reference to "Gypsy I '...Smith's work and charactor during his Wellington mission. This 1 moving-preacher is a converted gypsy, and ho is a Methodist by faith,' though he does not confine his services to any denomination. About thirteen years ago' he came out to Australia, but, after addressing a few meetings in tho large cities, ho was recalled to England by.the illness of hiswifo.; Some years ago ho visited South Africa, and quite recently his mission meetings in; America produced a deep impression. Ho is said to bo' a born /orator, a great part of his power consisting in tho simple earnestness and pathos of his preacliing, which abounds in vivid illustrations diawn. from his own; experience. For years past attempts have been made - ' to secure a.,visit from tho; "Gypsy" to Australia and Now :Zealand, but; ho is nearly always under, engagements last-' ing for years ahead. ; , The .quarterly meeting; of the Wellington Licensing Committee, Will bo held at tho Magistrate's Court at noon on Monday.
