'• . 6 . GOVERNMENT TO DISTRIBUTE £3000. This week's "Gazette" has the follow- " Notice is hereby'given that tho sum of £3000 has been voted by Parliament for distribution to public libraries. The distribution will take placo on February 4, 1908, and no clnim will be entitled to consideration that shall not have been sent in in duo form, and, received by tho Secretary for. Education, Wellington, on or beforo January 27, 1908. ■ , .. 1. A library to bo entitled to a subsidy must be public in tho senso of belonging to tho public, and of not being under the control of an association, society, or club whoso 'membership is composed of a section of tho community only, and if within n borough it must be open to tho public free of chnrge-i The receipts for tho year from subscriptions and donations must not have been less than £2, exclusive of moneys received from endowments, or from Government, or from borough or county councils, or for special building purposes, or ns rent, hire, or consideration for tho use of any room, or building, or land belonging to tho institution, in respect of none of which will subsidy bo allowed. Tho net proceeds of concerts, lectures, or other entertainments on behalf of the current expenses of tho library will be regarded as voluntary contributions. A subsidy will not be given to moro than ono library in the same town. ' , ' 2. In tho division of tho voto a nominal addition of £25 will be mado to tho amount of tho income of each library derived from subscriptions, donations, and rates, and tho voto will be divided according to tho amounts thus augmented; but no library will receive crodit for a larger income than £75—that is, in no caso will the augmented Amount en which distribution is based exceed £100. 3. Tho whole of the subsidy must be expended without delay in tho purchase of books for the library. J. Application to share in the distribution 1 must bo by means of a statutory declaration 1 by tho chairman, or secrotary, or treasurer 1 of tho institution on behalf of which it is ' made, and must bo accompanied by a state- ■ ment of the receipts and expenditure of tho ' institution for tho your ending on tho 31st .day of December, ]!)07.
