■ SYNOPSIS OF THE EVIDENCE. ! CHARGES NOT PROVED. ' . (BY TELEGRAM—mESS ASSOCIATION.) Eltliam, November 27. The "Argus" publishes tho following synopsis of the. evidence gathered as to alleged child slavery from nearly all tho schools in the district from Stratford towards Hawera :— I. No person interviewed would endorse the charge of child slavery. ' 2. No school teacher wag prepared to state that there is a case of hardship among cliildron attending school'at the present time. . 3. Some children come late on account of milking. , . 4. Some teachers found it difficult to get home-work done. 5. One teacher said his pupils were sometimes drowsy; 6; Medical men can 'cite no instance of illness induced by children working on farms. 7. No children have been knotfii to suffer physically, from taking part in milking. 8. Tho'woight of. evidence l is'that children arc as intellectual herp as elsewhere. \9. Milking by children has decreased rapidly during recent years. 10. The hour at which the children rise is about. 5.30 a.m. 11. The. number, of cows milked varies from six'to ten at tho height of tho season. 12. During a considerable portion of this time schools are closed.
