THE AEON. : According to the "Auckland Star," the steamer Aeon,. which arrived at Auckland last Friday, from San Francisco, brought about 1800 tons of cargo for New Zealand ports, being the largest cargo so fur brought down from' California by vessels of this line. It consists of large quantities of fruit, salmon, etc., and also a large consignment of, smelting machinery for tho Ferguson Mining and Smelting Company, Limited. Auckland. The greater part of tho Now Zealand cargo is for Auckland. The steamer has also on board a large quantity of lumber consigned to Sydney, which she loaded in Chcmninus, British Columbia, and which caused her a little delay in clearing from 'Frisco. The steamer made a fine weather passage 0f.25 days. AN EXPENSIVE TOUR, An English paper says it is reported thai Colonel Robert M. Thompson, a United States financier, retired naval oilicer aiid lawyer, has made arrangements for a tour round the world on a record scale for a private individual, and has chartered the British s.s. Mineola (of 47GG tons gross, built by Sir J. Laiug and Sons, Sunderland, in 1900, and owned by Messrs. T. Hogan and Sons, New York) to be specially fitted up for the trip. It is stated that the cruise will last eighteen months, and will cost about .£IOO,OOO. Alterations and decorations are to be carried out in the. vessel, on which .£2r>,uoo is to be expended. The vessel, it is said, will probably start on her cruise on Decomber 1, and will call at Gibraltar, then proneed through the Suez Canal to the Far East, and a call will be made at New Caledonia, where Colonel Thompson has nickel ore deposits.

The A. and A. steamer Lord Stanley, which , arrived at- Auckland yesterday, is expected to arrive at Wellington next Monday. Mr. 11. Anderton, second engineer of the Mararoa, and Mr. M'Arthur. second of the Monon-ai. have exchanged positions. Mr. Guy, Into of the Mararoa, lias joined the Waikaro as second engineer. The Union Company's steamer Mourn left Westport, for Lyttelton, at 10 a.m. yesterday, flip Hawea also sailed at 1 p.m., for Auckland. The Largo Lav- is expected to sail for Auckland to-morrow.

A new departure in connection with the timber trade is the charterini! of the barque Si call to load a full cargo of white pine at Hokianga, for Buenos Ayrcs. This is the first qat'Ro of the kind from New Zealand to Buenos Ay res.

The four-masted French barque President Felix Foure, bound from Havre to New Caledonia, was passed in the Tasmitn Sea on Thursday last, by the Union Company's steamer Manuka, which arrived at Auckland on Sunday, li-om Sydney.

According to " Fair Play" of October 17. the Norwegian barque. Apia, formerly the IVnitnngi, of the New Zealand Shipping Company, Limited, has just been dry-docked and repaired at Las Palmas, Grand Canary, after having been in collision. She was taken on Messrs. Bland)- Brothers and Co.'s patent slip, and repairs, which included removal and renewal of seven plates from bulwark down to turn of the bilge, renewal of sundry deck beams, frames and stringers, were executed within t throe weeks with the aid of pneumatic plant.
