BANK OF AUSTRALASIA,

The balance-sheet jof this Anglo-Australasian institution for the hnlf year from October 15, 190 C, -, to April 15, 1907, shows that the riett profit for the period was .£227,463 7s. 4d., and there was brought forward from the previous half year £16,801 12s. 7d., making the total ! amount of unappropriated profit .£244,324 19s. . ' lid. The gross profit for the period amounted to .£388,042 18s. Bd., and the expenses, including rates and taxes, absorbed .£100,579 11s. 4d., or 41.39 per cent., which shows very economical management. Out,.-of the profit .£15,000 was taken for writing off'the cost of bank premises, ■ and .£IOO,OOO. was: ; added to the reserve fund, which now stands at the substantial sum of ■ .£1,410,000, of ...which .£500,000 is invested in.K. per cent. Consols. The liabilities show circulation, .£504,871; deposits, £1C,G22,96G 13s. Id.; ■bills payable ' and other liabilities, .£3,291,936 7s. 3d.; capital reserve- and undivided profit, ,£3,139,324 19s. lid., making the total liabilities, £23,558,8!!9 os. 3d.; tho actual liabilities to the public, however, arc .£20,419,574. The assets show, specie, bullion, and cash balances, '£3,538,434 18s. Id.; loans at call and short notice, £2,240,000; British Government securities, £927,585 Is. Id.; India and Colonial .Government securities and other investments, £700,082 ■ Us. Sd.j bills i receivable, advances on securities, and other assets, £15,840,950 7s/ 8(1.; bank promises, £251.836 2s. Commenting on the moderate e.\ pansion in the advances, at the meeting of shareholders, the Chairman said:—" Tho change from adversity to prosperity which has come .upon tho population of' Australasia has not meant that banks or other financial institutions have increased their advances business, but. on tho contrary, though it goes without saying that the prosperity of the community must ujtimstf-iy result in Die benefit of such institutions, the immediate effect has been to yonder their customers more independent. It 4s largely duo to this fact that our advances do not show n greater expansion, but not altogether so, because it if our policy to seek a moderate and suft, if slow, expansion In our business, rather than to fos'ter an undue advance in values by a too ready offer of banking facilities." CHILLED BEEF. Apparently a new process which will enable fresh meat to be transported long distances has been ' discovered, for " The Syren" of October 16 records the success of an initial shipment from the Argentine. "The Syren" says:—"Tho first consignment of 'chilled' beef, under the process installed in the vessels of the Anglo-Argentine Shipping Company,' was discharged from tho steamer Guardiana in Liverpool ten days since. This meat, killed forty-three days previously, was brought from. Buenos Ayres and landed in first-class condition. Hitherto attempts to carry fresh meat long distances, except at low, temperatures, have resulted, unsatisfactorily, owing to spotting and mildew. The Guardiana's cargo was carried at a mean temperature of 315d0g. Fahr., or 3deg. higher than has before been attempted, and the results were fully equal to expectations. It is claimed that the process adopted on board the Guardiana will revolutionise tho chilled meat trade, and make possible the conveyance of Australian mutton to, Great Britain • without the necessity of freezing. The remainder of the parcel was discharged at Barry, forty-fivo days after shipment, also in perfect condition. Deductively it could with equal safety have been carried from Now Zealand." If this process comes up to the opinions expressed herein, it will do a good deal lor tho beef trnde of Australia, especially for Queensland. No doubt inquiries will bo made into this matter by either the Department of Industries and Commerce or the Department of Agriculture. The success of the process will mean moro meat and cheaper meat for the British consumers. NOTES. Tho total immigration into Canada from April to Augnst, inclusive, was over 174,047, there being a largo increase in tho number of British immigrants. Tho Lynda Soap and Trading Company, Gisborne, commenced operations on Monday last. The Company has eccured tho services of Mr.
