PORTRAIT SKETCHES.
: EXHIBITION BY MISS MAY MOORE. In Mr. Beadnall's studio in Willis Street is now to be seen a collection of very clever sketches from the brush or pencil, as the case may be, of Miss May Moore, a young lady whose rapid-fire sketches at' tho Exhibition commanded a good deal of attention, iliss Moore has the rare faculty of catching a likeness accurately, and therein lies tho secret of her. success, but she adds to that a variety of ways of reproducing them. Her water-colours are simple in composition, but effective, for tho artist docs not attempt to glaze over any physical shortcomings—she flatters less than the camera. A couple of good water-colours are those of Mr. W. E. Alassey, Loader of tho Opposition, and Jrlerr Benno Scherek, the talented pianist. That of Mr. TV. H. l'oole, M.H.R., done in crayons, is a trifle rugged. In oils, Miss Moore has a rather good portrait of tho much-painted Maggie Papakura, of Rotorua. There is a capital water-colour of Master Johnston (son of Mr. Walter Johnston, jun.), a sturdy boy, with a mop of crisp golden curls, and near by is a faithful profile of little Jean Plimmer. Tliero is a particularly.clever study of an old woman with a , skin puckered like an old apple, and another of a Wellington business man. In some of the.crayon profiles Miss Moore attempts.a high light outline effect that is in some instances just a littlo overdono, but in another class of work —pen and ink, with high lights in china white—the sketches aro artistically delicato, and betray an excellent idea of lino line. ! Miss Moore has taken the Rembrandt ■ studio in Upper Willis Street (near St. ' Peter's Church), and, as there is a tendency in favour of the sketch portrait, the visitor should be kept busy.
