Seven hundred Portuguese officers tried tc organise a demonstration in Lisbon in favour of King Carlos. So many oflicers were prepared to assist at a counter-demonstration that the police prohibited bo£h. Tho Premier, Senor Franco, denies that the Crown Prince, Luiz Phillipe, has been banished to Villaviciosa. The Premier's attempt to govern without the Cortes is creating a highly critical situation. The loyalty of tho army and the navy is questioned; Many newspapers have been suspended.
