GENERAL NEWS.

I regret to have to report (writes our Palmerston correspondent) that blight has already a strong hold upon the lata crops of potatoes, and the prospects do not appear to be at all bright. Spraying' operations are being carried out through the district. The crops generally throughout the Manawatu are looking well, but rain is urgently required. The absence of moisture can be particularly' noticed in canes where the ground was ploughed during wet weather and the crops rusheil on. The consequence is that'-the soil has formed into a hard •crust, and where such is tho case the progress made is not too gratifying' to farmers.
