PAPER ROADS.

THE, HIGHLAND PARK ESTATE ■ ■ t AGAIN. : . f Somo correspondence has been' exchanged between the Onslow Borough Council and tho City Council regarding tho paper, roads on the Highland Park Estate and the litigation exponses incurred by the Borough Council in contesting the question of ownership. The particular Vard in\ which those roads are situated is now amalgamated witli the city.. Some timoiago, the Onslow Borough Council wroto to tho City- Council recording its claim upon the city to a proportionate sharo of tho value (as might bo determined) of the roads, being all unformed portions thereof m-tho estate. Tho roads had, it was pointed out, alwnys been in the possossion of tho owners of tho estate, and the borough, after sbmo litigation, ,had obtained judgment that the roads wero public roads. The expense to the borough of those proceedings was stated to bo about £190. The roads in question wero, it was mentioned, originally valued for the borough at £2800, and it was oxpected that arrangements would be made with tho owners to roimburso tho Borough if tho roads were closed. These negotiations had fallen through, but it was still clear that tho city was receiving something which was certain to yield a large amount, as a considerable Dortion of tho roads wero impracticable, lurther, as ,tho expenses referred to were thrown upon tho borough as a whole it was only fair that the city should pay n proportion. .

At last night's meeting of tho Borough Council, a lettor was read from tho City Council, which intimated that it was propared to take over a quarry at a cost of £279 10s., but that no liability could bo accepted with regard to tho amount expended by the Borough Council in litigation in connection ■ with tbo roads.

It was resolved, on the motion of Councillor Lynnberg, that the Borough Council obtain legal advice on.tho matter.
