Tho light south-east wind increased rupidly, and from Thursday Monday heavy weather prevailed. Considerable minor damage, such as steel coverings being ripped off, occurred, while tho storm was at its height, u.id onoj sea flooded the forecastle, drenching tho men's quarters. The weather moderated on Monday afternoon, and a lino passage accompanied tho vessel until arrival. The cargo of the Largo Law consists of coal and timber principally, which >is for discharge at Wellington, Lyttelton, and Timaru. On the third day out ono of tho stokers, n man named Patrick Shcehan, came to him in his surgery for treatment. Dr. French had no reason to feel alarmed at tho man's appearance, but was surprised when tho latter turned and locked the door behind him. Then, with out any warning,' tho stoker threw himself upon the doctor, hurled him to the ground, and attacked him with a madman's desperation. Dr. French was unable, to resist tho maniac's strength, and could only cry out for help. The stoker held him by tho throat- ond tbr unfor-
