A letter was received from the Railway Department in explanation of the Society's complaint regarding the alleged neglect and delay in transit of a dog consigned from Auckland to Wellington. It was pointed out that the dog was not consigned in proper form, and that the De-, partment was not primarily responsible for tho dog's, subsequent treatment. The animal had been forwarded' as per address attached, but' during shunting operations at Palmerston tho car containing it had been detached arid returned to Now Plymouth. This would have been ; impossible had tho dog been properly consigned. An error on the part of a railway official had resulted in the car being returned to New Plymouth. The Department, however, could not accept responsibility in the matter, for the official had violated no regulation bearing on consignments. The Society's annual report and balance sheet will be issued in a day or two.
