THE HOLIDAY.
The weather yesterday fell a lot short of sample generally known as " King's." It rained uncompromisingly throughout the whole day, effectively quashing everything in tho form of out-door amusemont that had been arranged in connection with tho holiday. Apjirt from the marring of the holiday, tho rain was not altogether unwelcome, as the gardens wero suffering slightly from the past three week's dry weather. VETERANS' DEMONSTRATION. Auckland, Novomber 11. Thore was a bravo showing of voterans at the Drill Hall to-day, when the members of tho Empire Veterans' Association mustered to do honour to the King. Major Broun was in command, with Major Morrow as his sccond. Thore wore veterans who proudly wore Crimean medals on their breasts, others who could tell of tho march with Roberts to Kandahar, and romomber " Bobs" only as the hero of his own company, Major Broun oouuting.it as 0110 of his most treasured reminiscences that ho was iieutonant of tho same company in which Lord Roberts hold n captaincy. Perhaps the most unique distinction of all is that held by. Surgeon-Captain Bakewell, who to-day woro tho medals of the Crimoa and South Africa. Surgeon-Captain ' Bakoweil is tho only officer in Now Zoaland, possibly in tho Empire, who served in tho Crimea war and thou participated in tho recent South African campaign with ono of tho New Zealand contingents. Otinedin, Novomber 11. Steady rain fell throughout the night, but at nino this morning tho weatlior looked lileo clearing. Tho principal attraction is tho Taieri races. Retailors are observing a closo holiday. Wanganui, Novomber 11. There havo been heavy downpours of rain since Sunday morning, but tho woathor is cloaring now. Tho rain has been vory wolcomo.
