He carried on business,as watchmaker and jeweller, but retired in 1864, and thereafter devoted himself to scientific study and research. He was the invontor. of several scientific appliances, including a planometer, for which ho was awarded highest prize'by the Royal Scottish Boeioty. ■He also varied and simplified many of the solutions of Euclid. The Gtago University receives a substantial benefaction under, tho will of Mr. Beverley.
