Householders and business firms changing, or anticipating changing, their addresses aro requested to-notify compilers on their rounds, or to advise the office, either by tolcphoiin (No. 2760), or by letter. Wise's Directories, 5 Lambton Quay. IN TIIE SPIIEKE OF MEN'S DRESS. EVERYTHING fashionable is obtainable at MR. D. MILLIGAN'S English Tailoring Rooms, in Kclburno Avenue. This season ho is showing a record variety of smart Suitings, and consequently is attracting a record number of customers. Novelties in -purplo and brown arc leaders in fancy suitings, but there aro plenty of quieter shades for men who like a serviceable suit. Don't put off your clothes' order for coming events, as good tailoring requires time. ■ C 839 -, ' 'fair plat. Auckland, October 28, 1907. Editor, "Dominion," Wellington., SirReferring to yoilr Commercial 25th inst. on Breadstuffs, it is apparently written by an anient single taxer and free trader. Yon state, "If our agriculturists cannot compete against "India, Argentine, and Australia with their "poor yields, ond the handicap of shipping "charges (which are lower than ours), then it "seems that the business is not worth consideration." I assume this is your ruling in reference to all other protected industries, such as boots, clothing, etc., etc., if they cannot compete with the world's sweated surplusages, if so, then yoitr "Dominion" should transfer to some other parts where its logic is understood. l In the first place you omit to compare tho values of land, white living wages against coloured, low railages, compared with New Zealand's. The. places you mention do not plough .or reap; simply scarify the land and strip. A competent' New South Wales farming authority states that it only costs 2s. per acre to transfer his wheat from the standing crop in the field to the sack, and no ' barns or coverings aro required. What is the cost in Jndia and the Argentine with coloured labour? You also state, the Commonwealth's markets are menaced by New Zealand, which grows three times ns much per acre as Australia., Last year Australia produced 66 million bushels wheat, and had an exportable surplus of 26 million bushels. India and the Argentine had an exportable surplus of 17(i million bushels, against New Zealand's 5\ million bushels, and no exportable surplus. Where is tho menacing? Why, your arguments aro ludicrous. We candidly admit wc cannot compete with coloured Inborn- or the world's sweated mirplusngcs. No more thav. the boot, clothing, candle, and other numerous industries, can. In New' Zealand, good wages are paid; docs not this affect all consumers? . The, world's' wheat markets have suddenly advanced, this you overlook and blame tho New Zealand wheat grower and miller for it, becauso your, bread bill is a trifle higher. What about your other bills?' New Zealand flour is subject to. a discount. I remain, . Always at your service, P/VIRTUE, Manager, "Champion" Milling Company. 5526 ■ ."''-. .(Advt.)
