HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Hutt Borough Council was held Inst night. Thoro were present: Councillor Russell (in the chair), and Councillors O'Siillivan, Wildsniith, Baldwin, Grey, Holland, and Koss. Leavo of absence, on the ground of ill-health, was granted to the Mayor (Mr. T. A. Peterkiu) and the Town Clerk (Mr. 1 , -- R. Tho letter was referred to tho Waterworks Committee. ' . ■ The Engineer strongly urged the Council to carry out tho proposed drainage work in Ag'lionby Street. It was agreed that tho work, be proceeded with. A special sub-committee presented a proposed exceptional traffic by-law, and recommended that instructions be given to, havo if brought into operation at a:i early a date as possible Tho recommendation was adopted. The Department of Labour notified tho Council that inquiries had substantiated its claim for exemption from the operations of the preference clause, in the Wellington Labourers' Award, on the ground thnt Lower Hutt was not a suburb of Wellington. Tho Hutt Elver Board intimated that it had fully considered the Council's request that it yio tlio Council a stilted sum annually for tho clerical cervices rendered by its staff, and had decided that it would be better to accept tho Council's suggestion th;it the work of tho two bodies should bo severed. It would, therefore, make its: own arrangements at tho earliest possible date. Members of. the Council expressed tho opinion that the Board wns responsible for the severance, as it had refused to agree to pay a fair proportion of the cost of the work. The letter was received.

The House of Representatives last evening granted a further seven clays' leavo.of absence to Mr. Alison fWaitcmata)., on the ground of ill-health.
