GATHERING OF TEACHERS.
RECEPTION ,'TO MESSRS. W. T, GRUNDY 1 AND C. WATSON. Tho social .hall, at. tho- South ' Wellington School was well filled last night, when, a reception was tendered W. T. Grundy and C Watson. Both gentlemen had lately returned to .duty, after an absence of six months. Mr. William Foster, President of the Tea-, chers' Institute, in a happy speech, referred' to the guests of the evening. Roth had been associated with tho efforts of the institute, in. the past, in bringing about reforms in education in New Zealand. Monumental results of those endeavours wore The Colonial Scale of Salaries Act, and Tho Teachers! Court of Appeal Act. ; Mr. Grundy had 'become a member of the Institute in 1888. Prom 1892 until 1900, ho had filled the position of Secretary, and in 1901 ho was elected President. Mr. Watson entered the Institute in 1889, and was President in 1893.
Mr. Macmorran' 'paid a graceful tribute to the services of those gentlemen, iu connection with the welfare of the Institute. ' A short programme of music was then carried out. Misses Strnck and' Martin contributed vocal items, and Miss May Tonics, in u recitation, gave an ndmirnblo interpretation of "The Bobolink."
Mr. C., Watson then addressed tho gathering. Ho said the attention of the whole world was nt tho present time being, turned to methods of education. Now ideas were being evolved, and in some countries the people were spcnding.freoly in the eau.se of education. But ■ho was forced to fall back oil the fundamental principle of the wholo thing. It was not the. money, or-,the method, or the system that gave •to education tho measuro of success, it was tho man himself.. What was wanted was good talent, and to get this the conditions of service must bo made attractive.
Mr. Grundy, said that, ho would prefer to leave the account of his doings, at the Educational Conference in' London to some futi.ro time, .when he would read a oa"*" beforo the Tnstitutd.
