' ' SUCCESSFUL GISBORNE SCHEME. : ] A .Gisbornc Committee appointed to advise tho Farmers 1 Union, oil the question of : rotaining tho services of u. ■veterinary., sur- ■ goon, reported on • Saturday as follows: —; : " Regarding tlio appointment of .1 voter- 1 inary surgeon, whose services sho'uld bo 1 available for advice \in - connection: with : stock at all times during the year, to mem- ! hers of tho Gisbdrne branch of tho Union at ! a fixed annual fee, the committee regret to state that there is at tho present time an ! urgent necessity for such, services, particu- : larlv so for dairy-farmers, as there is, this year, a considerablp amount of trouble and : mortality among stock. ' The committee recommend that steps bo taken: to canvass and, 1 ascertain if sufficient members would bewil- ' ■ling to givo a yearly donation for tho sor-•' vicos of a veterinary surgeon. Mr. E. V. 1 Luttrcll, whom the committee would strongly ' rccominend for tho appointment, is willing : to undertako tho work for £100 per annum; 1 this is a comparatively low salary, but 110 is ready to undertake the work for that, ill ( order that tho systctm can- be given a fair . trial. The committee suggests that a fee . of £1 ]ier annum bo paid by any member -j who resides blithe flat and Within thirteen , miles to the Gisborno Post Office, and £2 , per annum by any member residing 011 the j liills, or beyond tho said thirteen miles', i radius. For these fees the member would ' be entitled to lmvo the services and.advice 1 of the surgeon for .all ailments ' in' any way J connected with his live stock, but, should .• any member require the surgeon to''.travel beyond tho, sjid thirteen miles' radius to | attend his stock, then such'; member• shall .pay direct to the surgeon his" actual travel- •, ling expenses, but in 110 case to pay less than- ■ us. a. flay or part of a "daywhile' the sur-' ; geon' is absent from Gisborno for such member. If two or more members apply, for the 1 surgeon's services about the' samee timei the 1 surgeon .shall attend to'each member, in .the 1 order of time of each application,- it thereby 1 becoming' tho, duty of tlio surgeon to attend ■: to members' stock in rotation: The com- 1 mittee would therefore recommend this for tho favourablo consideration' of members."
