THE POLITE SHOPMAN.
The Commercial Court at Berlin (says tho correspondent of tho "Daily Telegraph") awarded damages to a shopman who brought action against his employor for wrongful dismissal. It appears that the plaintiff, according to some of the customers of tho business whero he was ongaged, had been too polite. Several ladies complained, and tho employer discharged him without notice. Tho plaintiff sworo in tho witness-box that it was necessary for shopmen to inako complimentary remarks to Judy customers, such as "What a pretty blouse," or "That's a charming hat I" or a polite roferenco to personal •appearance. . In fact, many female clionts 'would go somowhoro else unless tho shopman was complimentary. Those customers: who caused his dismissal were probably disappointed because ho was not complimentary enough, and took revongo by reporting that he had been too familiar. The Court, which was composed of practical tradesmen, decided that the , plaintiff was only doing his duty to his employer, and that, therefore, his Uismissal was unjustified. Tho plaintiff was awarded a.month's:salary and costs.
