On Friday 6f last week a dance. was'given by the piipils. of Miss Violet Warburton in the Sydney Street Schoolroom. The platform ' and little side-rooms were carpeted and furnished prettily, and the supper tables were docoratcd with spring flowers, and many silver candlesticks. This was almost an allwhito dance, very few of the girls wearing coloured frocks or even a touch of colour with their whito frocks. Mi S3 Ina Dorset

wore white hot over whito silk; Miss Sheriff, pink muslin; Miss Brandon, white ombroidcred muslin with yellow sash; Miss Winifred Pollock, Miss Bontley, yellow silk, with black volvot bands; Miss Bodmin, pink floral muslin; Miss Gladys Diamond, Miss Fleming, black velvet with honiton laco bertha; Miss M. Fleming, blue silk, holiotropo silk; Miss Rita Lano, pink accordion pleated silk. There were more men than girls at this dance, and among the guests were Sir Kenneth Douglas, Mossrs. Atkinson, Armstrong, Bridges (2), Blow ,Chapman, Cooper, Hyarhs (2), Lang, Lyon, Mathews, Paul, Pownall; Rowley, Young, and Wix. On Friday evening Miss Harcourt gave a ladies'bridge party, and those of the guests who did not play bridge found a room set aside- for Badminton. Among tho guests were Misses Deans, K. Fitzgerald, M'Kenzio, M'Tavish, L. Brandon, Phyllis Higginson, Tweed, M. Pearco, and Enid 8011, and Mcsdanies Biss, Buchanan, Dymock, Tweed, and Joseph. Saturday was a full day from a social point e of view. At three o'clock in the afternoon o His Excellency the Governor opened the ani nual exhibition at tho Art Gallery in tho presence of an audience, chiefly composed of lady art lovors. Mrs. Wallis was presont, '' and Lady Ward, who wore a grey striped 3 costuriie with emerald green facings, and a D grey hat with green ostrich feathers. Mrs. s Hislop was in black; Mrs. Rhodes,' in black f brocade with black toque; Miss E. Fell, s green and white check silk with laco scarf, t and white picture hat, trimmed with hy--0 drangea; Mrs. D. Kirk,' a very pretty white and grey 1 striped kimono costume over laco blouse, with ; tuscan straw hat trimmed with ■ vieus rose; ; Mrsi Firth, grey coat, and skirt.

There is some very interesting work by. w>mon artists in the exhibition, decorative work as well as pictures.; Tho two pictures in pastel exhibited by Miss Sybil Johnson are the most novel and attractive things there. Queen Summer is,especially charming; the pose of the figure and the colour.schemo are excellent, and the-background is exceedingly well .'done. Sonie of the most competent art critics are of opinion that Miss Johnson shows more artistic promise than any other artist in New Zealand; that, while there arb some who have' the advantage * of. her in training, she'shows more.originality and artistic perception than any of them. Miss Way'month has fivo pictures, several of which have been bought. The ono of Governor's Bay Road is especially good in colour and composition. Another. Miss Waymouth exhibits pieces of jewellery and onamel work with beautiful brilliant colouring. Miss Richmond shows several pictures of the hillside country around Paraparaumu, charming, restful glimpses or a lovely country, but her chief pieco of work, and, perhaps, the best thing she has. ever done, is the portrait,of a young Oriental-look-ing girl, which she has called " An Exotic." Miss Bendall shows somo of her 'delightful little child pictures, and' it seemed a .pity that there woro on Saturday no children to admiro them. Mention shonld.be made or-;the very handsome tooled leather work exhibited by Miss C. A. Palmer, especially of tho bookstand with leather panel. Altogether, it was acknowledged' that the women artists had made, a very good display. As Saturday was also the opening, day: of' the boating season, it was to be expected that a violent nor'-westorly would bo blowing, or rain descending in torrents, but really nothing could havo been more beautiful and calm than the view of tho harbour from the boating sheds. AH the guests had ; dressed to match the day, so that tho skids, which are usually dedicated to the convenient,;but by no means decorativo garb of the rowing xnen, wcro'gay with brightly-coloured muslins and floral hats. The tables in the room where the Star Boating Club entertained its friends were beautifully decorated with '.blue and white irises, and crimson anemones, and the effect was much admired by the many guests. On Saturday evening tho Misses Beauchamp gave a danco for a few of their friends. The rooms'wero docorated with purple rhododendrons, but the principal attraction-was the beautiful garden which the mildness of tho night made it possible to enjoy to the full. Mrs. Beauchamp wore grey silk over pink glacej Miss Vera Beauchamp, black and white; Miss Chad Beauchamp, white not; and Miss Kathleen, black silk voile; Miss Pearce wore a charming frock of blue glace; Miss M'Kcnzio, pale blue silk with beautiful old lace- Miss Fell, floral silk; Miss Seddon, whit'o glace; Miss Butts', black dress and quaint Indian jewels; Miss Dean, yellow Empire frock. Mrs. Arthur Pcarcc is giving a danco on Tuesday night as a farewell to Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan. Mrs. Biss gave a bridge party on Friday night. Among the guests wore Mesdamcs Arthur Pearce, Buchanan, Tweed, C. Pearce, and Dalzicl, and Misses Eila Williams, Flora Brandon, and Deans, the Hon. H. C. Butler, and Messrs.. Buchanan, I Dalziel, Hodson, Coatcs, and Niwent.

On Tuesday evening the Bislinn f r v''"l- - n»'l Mrs. iv n |i:.. party at Bishopscourt, at which their Excellencies the Governor and Lady Plunkot were present. Browne, Professor and Mrs. Richmond, Professor and Mrs. Salmond, Mr. and Mrs. I Sprott, Mr. and Mrs. Stndholmo, Mr. and .j ,Mrs. Firth, Mrs. and Miss Medley, Mr. Mrs., j 'and tho Misses Boauchamp, Mr., Mrs., and . Miss Hamilton, Mr. Aitkon,. Mrs. Arthur Pearco, Mrs. and Miss Quick, Dr. Pollen, I Mr., Mrs. and Miss Humphries. a Tho Indian mail tin's week brought news I from two Wellington girls. Mrs. Earl John- , son, who has been spending some months at , Dalhousie in the Hills during the hot wea- , ther, was about to go into camp with her , husband for a fortnight. Mrs. Johnson has beon onjoying the round of gaieties that are proverbial in Indian society. s Miss Joan Hislop wrote from Brussels, t where she had spent a very enjoyable ten a days. She was afterwards going on to Lut} cerne with Mrs. Lemare, and they hoped to visit Italy together. Miss Hislop had had . one exciting day when she lost herself in J Brussels, and only found her way home after a series of wanderings that lasted nearly all clay. , On the evening of the day when Mr. Algar . Williams's wedding • took place in Christ- . church, Mrs. Turrell invited a few of hor f intimate friends to celebrate the event in a quiet way here. Among those present were j Mrs. Buchanan, Mrs. Dymock, Misses Eila j Williams, Fraser, and Fell. ; Announcement is made of tho engagement of Mr. Roy Barton, son of Mr. Richard Barton,, of Trcntham, to Miss Florence Bid--1 will, daughter of Mr. J. Bidwill.
