It took six trains to bring them from other parts of Ger-' many, and they were obliged to hire four* halls in order to listen': to the eulogies of the Schmidts. Superintendent George Rose, who ro. tired in August last from tho Mctropoli. ■ tan Police after forty-six years' service, is said to be the last surviving 'member of the "peelers," the picturesque force which preceded tho Metropolitan Police as the guardians of London.
