RETIRING.

London, October 9. Sir E. W. Hamilton, Joint Permanent Secretary to tho Treasury, is retiring because of ill-health. [Sir Edward Walter Hamilton entered the Treasury in 1870. Ho was Private Secretary to the Et. Hon. Robert Lowe, Chancellor of the Exchequer, from 1872 to 1873, and to Mr. Gladstone, First Lord of the Treasury,' from 1873 to 1874. and again froni 1880 to 1885. He has been Joint Permanent Secretary to the Treasury since 1902. Among his publications are -various musical compositions, a book on "National Debt—Conv6rsipn and Redemption," and a monograph on Mr. Gladstone. Sir E. W. Hamilton was born in 1817.]
