CITY COUNCIL.

Tho ordinary meeting of the City Council was held last night. There were present:—The Mayor (the : Hon. T. W. Hislop), Councillors Godber, Murdoch,-' Morrah, M'Laren, Carmichael, Biss, Fisher, Shirtcliffe, Hales, Ballinger, Fletcher, Cohen, and Luke. ■ Reports. j The Baths'' and City Reserves Committee recommended that the Boys' Institute be granted permission to exercise on the Basin Reserve on Y/ednesday evenings on portion of ground to be determined by custodian. They also reported that they had considered the application of residents of Goldiosbrae to have the road through Queen's Park open for public traffic. Having visited the'site, the Committee recommended that the request bo granted, subject to tho petitioners agreeing to contribute a sum of £20 towards cost of fencing required. To enable Councillors - to make themselves acquainted with the purpose of tho resolution, and to onablo them to visit the site, it was asked that the decision of the Council should bo hold over until next meeting night. Tho report was adopted. ~ The By-laws and Street Lighting Committee recommended: —That a lamp be erected in .Ingestre Strcot. That Mr. Stevens be informedthat the Council cannot accept any liability with reference to, tho subsidence of the land abutting on his property at Oriental Bay. That tho application of Mr. Chatfield, on behalf of Messrs. Macky,' Logan and Co. for permission to 'construct a 'Mansard roof on the King's Chambers be granted, subject to the conditions stipulated by tlio City Engineer. That tho application of Messrs. Tumbull and Son for permission to erect a building at the corner of Ghuznee and Willis Streets bo not granted, as the proposed building is not in accordanco with the by-laws. The report was adopted. The Financo and Property Committee recommended: —That a compassionate allowance be granted to Mrs. M'lnerney; 7s. 6d. per week to bo paid tho first' year and ss. per week the second year. That tho Corporation auditor' be paid au additional' fifty guineas per annum for auditing the electric lighting department's accounts. That the necessary work be carried out at the Protective Works, Mangatainoka River, Pahiatua, ■ as recommended by tho City Engineer.- That Mr. Chappie, rate collector, be granted twelve months' leave of absence on full pay. That Mr. Pethurick be granted three months' leave of absence on full pay, and'that his resignation bo accepted. That tlio'request of Messrs. C. and A. Odlin that the Council should construct a crossing across Jervois Qwiy be not granted in the meantime. That the piece or land at Nairn Street be offered to Mrs. Bruce for the sum of £75. That tho. Library Committeo be authorised to'.'call. for tenders for additions to the Newtown Public Library according .to. tho plans submitted, by Mr. Pothcrick. That Mr. Seaton be appointed assessor in re Smith and Smith v. Corporation.. That the work of disinfecting premises in the City be carried out by tho Sanitary Inspector's department. .That Mr. F. Quinn be authorised to carry out the work of rehumboring the-whole of the premises,in that part of tho City hithorto known as tho Wellington Ward, ■ subject to arrangement of details ..with' the Council's officers. Tho report was adopted. The Powor Stations and Tramways Committee recommoiidcd that current bo supplied to tho Miramar .Wonderland Company at' a charge of Gd. per unit, provided they pay to tho Corporation tho sum of £160 to cover the cost of tho installation, as recommended by tho electrical engineer; that they have received- a .request from tho Onslow Borough Council that. the'chargo for lighting strcot lamps in their borough should be. reduced: Tho Committee, however, did not rccommond any reduction being mado. The report was adopted.

Tho Libraries Committee reported that they had received an odor from Mr. W. F.. Eggors, who 'agreed to dedicatb to tho Council nineteen super, feet of part sections 11 and 12, town aero, 918, Revans Street, in. orchango for three and three-quarter super, feet of tho library reserve, and the 1 Committoo recommended tho acceptance of tho offer. Tho report was adopted. A report froni tho Engineer,- in reference to-tho dedication of certain roads in tho Upland Estate, was referred to tho Outlying Districts Committee. ■'.'■. Tho question of allowing a balcony to be erected in connection with the Palace Buildings, Willis Street, 'for which plans had been, forwarded, was referred to the By-laws Committeo to report.. Municipal Bills. Councillor ShirtclifFo enquired whether any report had been prepared in roferonco. to tho Firo Brigades Bill, which was postponed for consideration at the previous meeting. It was a most important matter, affecting tho interests of tho Corporation, especially in regard to property. Councillor Fletcher protested against tho tendency of Parliament to treat, municipal bodies in a spirit of triviality. He moved that a special meeting of the Council bo held on Monday next to consider the various Bills. . Councillor Shirtclift'e seconded, and the motion was carried. Miscellaneous. Councillor Fisher gave notice to movo: "That tho Library Committeo be requested to consider the question of. providing a public library for tho Thorn'don end of tho city." Councillor Fletcher asked if any improvements in the roads of Wadestown wcro provided for by tho Engineer. The Mayor replied that as. soon as' tho plans wore ready for tho Wadestown tramway the mattor would come under consideration. If the ratepayers determined on the main road lor tho route, it would have to bo widened and mostly reformed; therefore it was not worth whilo doing anything in the meantime, as the Engineer said tho roads were' not getting ' any worso.
