THE WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of tho Wellington Cricket Association to bo presented at the annual meeting on Monday next states that not quite so much trouble was experienced in tho matter of grounds last season. Several now wickets wore obtained, and it is hoped to make the samo arrangements for tho coming season. In addition good wickbts will probably bo available at Pctone', and in tho near future on Kolburne and Miramar Parks, so that it is anticipated that the question of grounds should not be a difficult one in the future The various' competitions wero won as follows :—Senior, Wellington College Old Boys; Junior, Petone; Third Class, Johnsonrillc'; Fourth Class, Thorndon A. Representative matches wore played :—Against England (M.C.C.), first game drawn; v. England (M.C.C.), second game drawn; v.' Canterbury, lost by five . wickets. Tho Association was represented in the test games, New Zealand v. M.C.C, by Messrs. A. B. Williams, K. ,H. Tucker, J. J. Mahony, and 'E.- F. - Upham. The balance shoot records a', loss of £167 on the past season's operations, duo to the pooling of the takings on tho visit of the M.C.C. team. A great deal of additional expenditure by the Association, though charged against the year's income, was of such a nature fas not to be re-currenfc for some years to come, while £01 of previous year's accounts' had been paid out of this year's receipts, l as against' £11 tho previous season. Purchaso and hire of horso'involved the expenditure of £46 moro 'than last year, and thero wore no reprosontativo games from which any profit accrued to tho Assotion. The visit of the team, to Canterbury cost over .£SO. Ono of tho largest items of expenditure— £94 in plant, repairs and material—is nearly £80 in excess of previous year's jtoins. under those head-, ings,'and practically all of this excess is non-recurrent. Owing to interruption in club .cricket, ground fees received wero. about' £40 short of an ordinary season's cricket. . • A' small' balance is still duo from the New Zealand Cricket Council. A recent cable stated that G. I< ■j'essbpj .the Gloucestershire captain, scored 191.in 90 minutes playing f"' the Gontlehieii; of'the. South against tho Players of tho South, at Hastings, at the beginning of last week. Previous to. Jessop's appearance in firstclass cricket, C. I. Tr.n-getter that ever played first-das'? cricket; as well as the hardest hitter, "Lillywhite's Annua'" of 1374 describing liim a3 " tho grandest hitter ever seen." So hard did he hit, tint playing for tho Gentlemen of Englarr' against I Zingari at Scarborougli, ir. August, 1887, he made 107 in twentysix hits, but he did not score. off ? number of balls] and his innings occupied.him alittlo 'over ! nn hour. Jcssop, on the 'othor hand, does not ma'.v: such gigantic strokes as Thorntc?. Bonnor, Lyons, tho lato'W. J. Ford, tho lato George TJlyctt, and .others that could-bo mentioned; but ho can hit moro balls to tho boundary, many of ■which the big- hitters /would .hay? merely played. In' 1897, at Hnrregate, Jessop, playing for . Gloucestershire against Yorkshire, scored 10] out of the 118'mado while ho wr? in in forty minutes. Two _ year: later, , for Cambridge Universitagainst tho same county, he ,ran up 171 not out of 202 in 105 minutes", 1 and for/Gloucestershire against Nottinghamshire ho mado 126 in 90, minutes. Porliaps tho most remarkable picco of batting ho over did, however, was against Nottinghamsliiro iri IQO2, whon lie raised his score from 15 to 100 in 15 minutes. In 1901 he scored 253 out of'3lß in two hours and a half'for England-against Yorkshire (champion • • county), at Lord's. In 1903, for Gloucestershire v. Sussex, 286 out of, 355—just under three hours; in 1904, for Gloucestershire y. Nottinghamshire, 200 ' out of 317 in two hours and a half; in 1904, for Gloucestershire v,. Sussex, 234 out of 34.6 v.in two hours, and 35 minutes'; and • iir 1907, against tho!same county,- 240 out of .337 in three hours and a quarter. His \ memorable innings of 104 for England against Australia ir tho final test''match in 19.03 occupied 75 minutes, and fairly won tho match for his side. He visited Australia with. Maclaren's team in 1901-2, but quite failed to. show his English forni with, tho bat, though doing splendid work in tlio field. : : Tlio programme of tho M.C.C. team in Australia includes a match with an Eleven of Viotoria. Tho South Melbourno C.C. has arranged to take over tho match, for which it will pay tho V.C.A. £210. Tho club, in the circumstances, will, select th'e team. The match has '• its counterpart on the , programme of Australian .'Elevens' in ■ "tho.-Eleven of England" fixture. ,-''..' | David Denton, the Yorkshire cricketer, had -a vory successful benefit match at Leeds in August, the receipts amounting to £1776 17s. lid. \S ? .
