TUB WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION.
Tho annual meeting of tho Wellington/Provincial Lawn Tennis Association was held last evening, Mr. G. A. Hurley occupying the chair. The report pointed out that, tho game has made a veiy satisfactory advance' in strength during the past season, eight now clubs becoming affiliated. There are, however, still a few clubs who have not accepted the overtures made lo them to join, but it is hoped to get them in. Tin entries for tho TownClub competitions were not very satisfactory, only four teams competing for the shield, rvc for the cup and four for lite pennant. This, the committee consider, very. disappointing as it was expected that tho Association's efforts in providing a ground at Day's Bay would have been the means of a much larger entry than usual. Only one round was played. Tho Wellington No. ] team won the shield, Wellington No. 2 the cup, and Brougham Hill 3B tho pennant. Mainly owing to. the cll'orts of Mr. Hurley tho Inter-Club Country Competitions were not allowed to again Jail into oblivion. Fivo clubs—Olaki, Foxtoit, Palmcrston North, FcUdlng, and Masterlon—entered, and the results - were:—Otaki beat Poxton, Palmcrston North beat Feilding, and Palmcrston North, by winning tho majority of the games beat Otaki al'ler two matches had been played. The final between Palmcrston North and Masterton could not be played off owing to difficulties in travelling. Mr. Hurley suggests that these two clubs should be. bracketed and their names inscribed on the cup as tho winners for. 1906-7. ,lt is suggested ■by the-committee that the Association 'should profit by past experience, and, in lieu of running the tournament at Easter, when fhe weather can never be depended, upon, should |( hold it at Christmas. The balance-sheet showed a credit at the bank of £44 7s. 10d., and in excess of assets over liabilities totalling £133 7s. lOd. The chairman in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet remarked that the Association was in a better position than it had ever been before. The finances were first-class, and tho improvement in tho game was satisfactory. There had been, 1 some adverse criticis nimado during tho year in reference to the matter of country teams. Personally, he believed that criticisms wens' deserved. . Tho country clubs had not- been, as well managed by the Association as. they might have been, but it was a difficult matter to get these clubs together. He trusted that the country clubs . would he better catered for-in, future. The following officers were elected for the ensuing season: President, Mr. 11. M.
