Spinsters and Bachelors Ball.
It is many years sinoe the Spinsters and Benedicts of the town entertained the public at a ball. However, guided perhaps by the success of similar functions haldin neighboring centres, the local young folk took the matter up at a preliminary meeting a few weeks ago. Promises of support were so generous that a function was at once decided on. It took place on September 23rd, and was such a huge success that there will not likely be such a long period as formerly before another is held. All the preliminaries were admirably carried out by a combined committee of twelve, and every dotail was attended to in a thorough manner. The hall was profusely decorated with streamer effects, aided by colored lights, and other appointments added to the comfort of those who accepted the invitation to attend, We doubt if a larger number has ever attended a similar function in the hall. In all, 115 couples sat down to aupper, and there must have been some who did not. wait for that important part of the evening. The floor was in perfect order. Mr Hardy's orchestra supplied excellent music, the members being Miss Partridge, Messrs W. Hardy, Leo. PatQiaon, G. Mitchell, and T. Fleming. Those who directed affairs were Messrs J. Clarkson and P. Isitt. Finally a word for the catering, which was in the hands of M> J. B/oberts. Of it the eoiumitteo has expressed itself to in high appreciation, as also have those who attended, Tho tables were tastefully laid out, stainless cutlery featuring, and an abundance of delicacies was provided. It could not have been better, and it is something to record that such air- unexpectedly large number was fully provided for. Altogether the ball was a huge succe?,^ A financial meeting s,h,Q\ v ad there, was a very s%hji cjeffcit. To npet \b a dance \% tq he held in the Athemuum on Thqrscjay evening, an 3 J 3 tuu'3 to ho well attended,
We coultl not let the oeeaaion pass \yithout e.\uvossiny general appreciation qf the inamicv ia which tho secretaries, Misa 0. Gordon and. Mr L. Jallcy, carried out thsir duties.
