Mount Pisa Lauds.
Another step in the local agitation for the resumption of Mount Pisa land was taken on Monday evening, by the local Returned Soldiers Committee. Following the Government’s refusal of Colonel Nichols oiler some weeks ago, petitions were drawn up and circulated throughout the district, urging the Government to take over the property, together with the freehold and water rights. At Monday’s meeting there was a representative attendance of the committee, Rev. Rankin, and Messrs R. D. Poison and R. Varcoo, being present by request. Mr A. Ree was voted to the chair.
The petitions, signed practically unanimously throughout the district and the Upper Clutha Valley, were presented. Several spoke on the merits of the ease and in support of the request now being made, Their arguments were that by acquiring the freehold and valuable water rights, the value of the property for subdivision would be greatly enhanced, and much better results could be obtained than if only the leasehold was acquired. One speaker pointed out that from among all the local returned soldiers only two had been successful in securing land, and many were anxiously waiting for Mount Visa. The position in regard to the low lands was also raised and discussed. The meeting resolved that delegates be appointed to proceed at once to Wellington and place the matter before the authorities, those appointed being Rev. Rankin, Messrs V. L>. poison and T. Treyalhan. Mr R. Vareoe was unable to accept the oiler as one of the members. The delegates left for Wellington on Friday morning apd will meet the authorities to-day.
