The Canterbury Land Board lias been criticised recently for its procedure in connection with the recent ballot for back-country runs. It was stated that the Board had practically excluded in some cases the very class of people it ought to have encouraged —experienced persons with medium capital —while it admitted the wives and daughters of professional men and others not only without any practical experience but in cases without ample means. Referring to those criticisms the other day Mr T. N. Brodrick, Commissioner of Crown Lands, said that no matter what limit had been fixed there would still be people on the border line between those who were accepted and those who were rejected, and the same criticism might be made. The Board had done its best. It might not hive been successful in satisfying everybo ly. but il could hardly be expected to completely succeed in that respect.
