A Huge Gamble.
Gambling on a colossal scale still goes on in London. It is currently reported in the clubs that on a quite recent occasion three rubbers of bridge were played, with the result that no less a sum than £-18,200 changed hands. The plnjers were millionaires from the other side of the Atlantic, and the scene of (lie game a wellknown hotel much frequented by American visitors to Great Britain. The stakes were £SO a point, or £5,000 a hundred, and it was natur ally agreed that three rubbers should be plated, the partnerships remaining throughout as decided by the original cut. There were twenty eight deals in all—seven, six, and fifteen respectively. The same partners won each rubber, the aggregate not points in tbeir favor being 864. The scores were 312-32. 436 - 64, and 318 106. There was only one “slam” recorded during the play, and that by the winners, who obtained a “ grand ” on going no trumps with a hundred aces. The next best score was also made by the winners—lour tricks with no trumps, ami “40 above.” The losers are to have their revenge when one of the players returns from a brief Continental visit.
