Wanaka Notes.

After a spell of hard frost thine arc indications of a change, and it is to bo Imped that the winter, which has been of the mildest experienced for some years, is now going to give place to spring. There Ims been more sickness in this district lately than the oldest residents remember before, and scarcely a family lias escaped from either whooping cough among the young or influenza among the old. In many cases this Ins been followed by chest complaints. The annual meeting of the load Tenuis club was held on Wednesday last and was well attended, the president, Mr Ji. M. Turnbull, presiding The annual balance-sheet shown] a credit of X 1 12s. A new site for a court has been procured from tintrustees of the library, at a small annual rental, the lease being for seven years. It Ims been decided t> lay down an asphalt court and over £3O is now in hand for this purpose, 1 understand the work will be put in hand at once, The following officebearers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Mr It. M. Turnbull, ; captain, Mr Then, Russell; vicecaptain, Mr M. Turnbull ; si cc-tary and treasurer, llev. A. V. (J. Chandler. Congregational meetings have been held at the varpnps preaching stations of the Presbyterian church for the purpose of electing a committee of management for the ensuing year. Messrs 11 M. Turnbull, E. C. Ewing, A S. Burns, A. M‘Laren, and J. 11. King v/ero elected for Pembroke, Messrs E. (!. M‘A rthnr, William Smith, and Dan Urqulmrt for llawea, Mr Win, Kiugan for Maungawcra-, and Mr John Iloss for Lnggate. The annual social in connection with this church has had to lie postponed owing to various causes, but it is expected it will be held at an early dale. A number of tradesmen are expected from Dunedin in the c nirse of a week to start building the new launch. 1 understand a portion of the boat is now en route from Dunedin, and it is the intention of the syndicate who are putting the launch on the lake to have her ready and running before Christmas. Rumors are alloat of a new store being opened in Pembroke, but tins requires confirmation. The Tunas and Wanaka football teams played a return in itch on (he local ground on Saturday, bill hist. The weather was perfect, and an exceedingly fast and well contested &a.iue resulted iu favor of Wanaka by
six points to three. In the first spell F. (Jolhngs scored a line try for Wanaka, and in the second half Wheeler scored for Tarras, and MMvenzie kicked a splendid goal from a mark for the home team. Mr A. Bremner was a very efficient referee. 1 regret to record a sad bereavement in the family of Mr R. Walker, the well-known coach-driver, the death of one of las twin sons, aged about six months, resulting on Thursday last due to complications following an attack of whooping cough. The sympathy of the district is extended to the parents.
