Private E. Marshall, who is a recruit, won this with a possible including his handicap, and considering this is the first time he has shot, speaks well for his success in the future. The old shots had better beware.
The aggregate at the South Island Rifle Association Championship was won by Lieutenant King or the Linwood Rifles, with a score of 339, Private Smith, of the Cromwell Rifles finished 20th, with a score of 314. There were 134 competitors competing.
The Cromwell Rifles have juefc finished their class firing, and some good scares have been registered, (Jorp Thomas puttiny on the possible for a marksman's course (56), and Sergeants Bruce and Wrightson and Lieut Jolly, 55 ; Private Smith, 54 ; Corp Holden, 52 ; Privates Cahill and Holden, 51. The Cromwell Iliflea haß 19 marksmen this year, which ia a splendid record. For this each man secures 10s, exclusive of officers, from the Government, and as they only allow 10 money prizes, the Cromwell Rifles have secured the maximum.
The last parade of the volunteer year was held on Tuesday evening, there being a very good muster. We are glad to see that the volunteers, under the able guidance of Captain Mackenzie and his officers, are putting their shoulderß to the wheel, and we hope that good volunteers will be the result.
In view of the forthcoming Goldlields Challenge Shield Match, which will be competed for at Alexandra, on the 17th March.
