Moran, Cummock, and W. Russell. fn my report of the RannockburnCrorawell match I forgot to mention that Mr Laidlaw acted as referee, and as usual gave every satisfaction to both sides. The Bannockburn club had a strong practice on Saturday, several players of the Cromwell club going out as it is impossible to get a practice up in Cromwell.

1 have received a letter from Mr

Hawkes complaining of the ungentlemanly way in which ho was treated on the occasion of the Bannockburn v Cromwell match, when he was hooted by the crowd, and also by some members of the Cromwell ream who permitted their excitement to run away with their justice and their courtesy. I received the letter too late to make use of it in my report of the match, and I must apologise to Mr Hawkes for not mentioning the circumstance, but, seeing that Mr Richards was treated equally as badly by some of the Bannockburn team, I thought it best not to say anything about those little unpleasantnesses. The following is Mr Hawkes’ letter, which explains the position fully ; To “Goal-post,” Cromwell Akous. Dear Sir, —In putting in your report of yesterday’s match in the Argus I think it would be only fair to me to make some mention of the rough treatment I received from the hands of the spectators and also some members of the Cromwell team by being hooted for giving a ball as being out in the second spell, when others thought it was not out. The ball was kicked by a Bannockburn player, and went at least four feet over the touch line, and was blown back over the Cromwell goal line, where it was forced, and I gave it out under Case Law, page 79 in annual, for which I got hooted. Mr Laidlaw came to me after the match and told me my decision was correct as he saw it. More than one of the Cromwell team after the match apparently new nothing about the rule till shown it in the annual. Trusting you will clear me of the slur cast on me. I am, etc., Adrian H. Hawkes. Bannockburn, 19th August, 1594.
