LAKE WAN AKA.

IFROM OUR OWS CORRESPONDENT ]

Lake Wanaka, August 25,

Business generally 7 is still pretty quiet here, but now the Winter is through, and we are again emerging into Spring we are looking forward to an improvement, to relieve the dull lethargy we have been enduring for the last three months.

A mild form of the influenza seems to be pervading the Hawea Flat at present, it is to be hoped it will not become general or assume a more serious form. Mrs Donald M‘Lean, of Hawea, is, I believe, seriously ill. To procure the attendance of a doctor for two or three visits means a serious matter to a person of moderate means, and although it has been proved that the combined districts of Hawea, Cardrona, and Wanaka are able to maintain a doctor, no attempt seems to be made to procure one for the place, and thus save any one individual paying a sum equal to his yearly savings for two visits of a medical man.

Monday is court day with us, and as is generally the case promises to be a field day for all and sundry, it is to be hoped the result will prove satisfactory to all concerned, although it invariably never does. As a rule litigation proves only beneficial to the legal fraternity.

The Cardrona Miners’ Association intend holding a ball on the 7th prox., ana it promises to be an enjoyable affair. The Cardrona people are noted for their hospitality to outsiders visiting their gatherings. This will, no doubt, induce visitors from the surrounding districts to be present in goodly numbers. At a meeting of the Library Committee held last Friday evening, Miss Hedditch was elected librarian for the current 12 months. It is to be hoped the committee will see that the rules adoped by them will be faithfully carried out. lam told some of the subscribers intend demanding a fresh election, the committee now in office not being legally elected. Seemingly at their election a proposal was carried that only subscribers could vote to elect a committee, one vote was however used, in which the recorder of the vote w r as not a subscriber. However, should a fresh election be demanded, the outs and ins of this peculiar transaction will, no doubt, be thoroughly ventilated.

The Pembroke Church committee being short of funds intend holding a concert about the end of September. I believe the Flax Mill plant at the Makarora is for sale. So far, this unfortunate mill has had many ups and downs, and what its ultimate fate will be it is difficult to predict. The value of the plant is materially reduced by the low price of flax at present ruling. Should flax rise in value, the mill would be a profitable investment.
