A letter has been received from Mr Gladstone's private secretary re the Highland Crofters, in which he states he will communicate with those of his colleagues especially charged with dealing with the question brought under his notice by the Caledonian Society. At the inquest on the body of Stanley, who fell through a skylight from the roof of the City Hotel, the jury recommended the City Council to pass a bye-law to have bars placed on similar skylights, 'and gave a verdict of Accidental Death. At the annual meeting of the Duneain Licensing Committee no 12 o'clock licenses were granted, and only nine of the principal hotels were granted 11 o'clock licenses. Owen and Graham's wholesale warehouse in Auckland has been destroyed by fire. The place was insured for £49,000, and the damage done is estimated at £30,000.
