He was lying with both hands under his breast. No evidence was forthcoming of how he got iuto that position, and the jury returned a verdict of " Found Drowned." It is stated that a quantity of blasting powder and a piece of fuse was found inside a barn at Maungatua, where a wedding had taken place the previous evening. The fuse had been lighted but had gone out before reaching the powder, John Ayres, the Auckland jeweller, who had been charged with stealing from a pawnbroker's shop goods to the value of £IOO, about a year ago, has been discharged without a stain on his character. The police have made two arrests in connection with the jewellry robbery in Wellingtonone at Lyttelton of a man named Appendale, who had been employed at the Te Aro Hotel. INTERCOLONIAL. A large and enthusiastic meeting was held in Melbourne on Friday to initiate a movement to erect a statue to the late General Gordon.

There were about 4000 present, and the project was approved, and subscriptions promised. The two men, Ross and Milne, arrested on a charge of being connected in the extensive robbery from the London Chartered Bank at Horseham in 1884, have been remanded. It is stated that the Queensland Government are in possession of information from an authentic source to the effect that Milne Bay, New Guinea, has been forcibly seized by a German vessel.
