HAWEA JOCKEY CLUB RACES.

(FROM OUH OWN CORKKHI’ONDKNT.) The annual race-meeting of the above Club came off on 17th inst., and financially speaking was a success. The attendance was not so good as last year, but the racing was better. The Stewards carried out their respective duties very efficiently, but of course there was a lot to say about the handicapping,’and I would therefore advise the Club to advertise their meeting next year in the mouth of January, and try and procure a haudicapper who is able and willing to back his opinion, and not leave it to the Stewards, as in every probability the night they are wanted to be in attendance they are sure to find some excuse for being absent, and consequently the delicate duty of handicapping falls to the lot of one or two, who, in all probability, would sooner have nothing to say in the matter, but owing to the respective offices which they hold in the Club it is imperatively necessary that they should be in attendance. I should also suggest that the weights be declared three weeks or one month before the meeting so as to give horses from a distance the chance of knowing what weight they will have to carry before they arrive on the ground. With a little more unanimity of action locally I see no reason why any race should appear on the programme under two figures, which would induce owners of local horses to have them in better form, and might also be an inducement to parties at a distance to send their horses to compete for the events. I cannot conclude without saying that it was hardly fair of the Cromwellites to have, held their Caledonian Gathering on the same date as our meeting, it being the fourth year that such meeting has taken place—twice under the heading of the Jockey Club. I don’t think Bobby Burns would be very well pleased if he knew that they were celebrating his anniversary on St. Patrick’s Day, and I am pretty well sure that St, Patrick would be highly indignant if he knew a Caledonian Gathering was organised in honor of another man on the day set apart for him as a holiday,

The following is a report of the different events : Maiden Plate, of 8 sovs. For all horses that never won public money. Distance, one mile. Weight, one stone over weight for age. Mr R.
