The Governor has given up the idea of visiting the South Island this year, Lady Gordon, whom he was to meet at the Bluff, not being likely to arrive for some time. Tolcher and Walker have been nominated for the Mayoralty of Lawrence. Captain Barry addresses an open-air meeting in the Octagon to-night.

The Maoris have ransacked surveyors’ tents, stealing instrumentst, &c., at Hawkes Bav.

Farther particulars of the Te Arohamurder state that the Maori named Simon was found at the roadside with his head nearly severed from the body by a fearful gash, the skull battered, &c. There had evidently been a hard struggle. The motive was robbery. The Russian prisoner’s name is Procoffy. The only evidence against him showed he had quarrelled with the Maori the previous day, and his clothes were found with newly-washed stains of blood. He is remanded on the charge of murder.

London, February 14. A meeting took place in Hyde Park to-day in opposition to measures proposed by Government for settlement of agitation in Ire land. A considerable number of people were present, violent speeches were made and copies of the Irish Coercion Bill burned on the platform.

Capetown, February 13. Negotiations for cessation of hostilities between the Cape forces and the Basutos are proceeding and a week’s armistice has been proclaimed.
