BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tho ordinary fortnightly meeting of Borough Council was held on Friday evening last. PresentT-His Worship the Mayor, and Crs Murrell, Olds, Stuart and Pretsch., ..,, Minutes of previous meeting having been read and confirmed, Correspondence was dealt with. There was no outward correspondence. Inward consisted of: Letter from Corporation solicitor, stating Mr Goodger's counsel had notified him ithat the appeal against Magistrate's judgment for rent due had been abandoned, and the Council, was at liberty,to enforce judgment, amounting, with, costs;,to about £B6 ; From Clerk ,to Bench informing the Council that the 4th of March had been fixed as the date of sitting of the Assessment Court for the Borough,; From Inspector Hickson, stating that the police were, not, allowed to undertake the collecting of dogtax ; From Alexandra and Queenstown Borough Councils, re daily mail, both being equally anxious to have it continued. [Gr Goodger here took his seat.] The Mayor said they would have to go back to the old system of obtaining dog:tax, and in case of owners failing to register the police would have to, prosecute. He would suggest that the Town Clerk be appointed Registrar, and his office be registered in accordance with the Act.-

On the motion of Cr Stuart,; seconded by Or Olds, a motion was carried in accordance with the Mayor's views. In the matter of judgment against. Goodger, the,subject was ordered to stand over, as was also questions of waterworks overdraft and provision for sinking fund. The Clerk was instructed to write the Arrow Borough Council for return of papers connected with water-works, which had been lenttpthat body. The rate-book for year ending 31st March, 1881,; was laid on the table and signed in terms of the Act. Owing to the small attendance of members a number of matters of more or less importance was held over till a future meeting.
