ARROW DISTRICT ATHLETIC SPORTS.
To the Editor of the Cromwell Argus. Sir, —A leader of unusual length appeared in your contemporary the Arrow Observer of this week deprecating the so-called small amount of prize-money given by the ArrowSports Committee for foot-racing and athletic sports, in comparison with the amount given for tilting at the ring. On looking through and totting up the amounts given in the programme, I find there is £4l 15s for footracing, jumping, etc., and £8 for tilting at the ring. This seems a very liberal programme, and the Committee have treated the varied events very fairly and evenly. There have been, I hear, 20 or 30 entries yearly for tilting, and the Committee have to study the interests of one or two running men who may enter, as also to guard against the " straight tip" element of that department, of which there was such a plethora last year, to the disgust of all lovers of fair and honest English sport. I hope the editor of the Arrow Observer will be pacified after perusing this, as he can rest assured it is true, as also by reference to his files he will find this year's programme a more liberal one than that of previous years.—lam, &c., One of the Boys. Arrow River, Nov. 29, 1876.
