OTAGO EDUCATION BOARD.

DISTRICT BUSINESS. At tlio monthly meeting last week the following appointments of district inteiest were made:—.la'mes ('. Smith, head master, -Ben-liar, vice .J. M. Miller, promoted; Gabriel >M. Luke, head master, Mill'iini, vice li. Pilling, resigned.

The Benhar Committee asked that an additional acre of ground 'be acquired for school purposes.—Held over.

The Otanomomo 'Committee asked for the erection of a teacher's residence. — Referred to the country members of the hoard and architect for consideration. .Mr G. A. Turner (organiser) reported that lie had visited -I schools 1 in the Cat!ins district during the five weeks ended August 15. The attendance had been more or less seriously- affected by an epidemic of colds, which hi' certain school districts was still verv prevalent. The following schools wcreTompelled to close for a week:—Tawanui, Puketiro, ami Hiiia Hina. In the majority of •schools visited he had taken over, lor the time being, the control and organisation, and had demonstrated the working of an amended time-table or probablv an improved scheme. In the schools visited a distinct improvement was shown-, and teachers »enerally were anxious to learn, and were desirous of improving their professional work and status. In two schools —Katanui and -J'apatowai—a serious attempt was being made to establish school libraries, and lie hoped by the end of the year that all 'local schools would be so equipped. With regard to equipment he would point out that few schools had adequate equipment for the teaching of all subjects. Suitable pictures and apparatus for the teaching of geography ■were, in many: cases, entirely lacking. Doubtless in the near future up-to-date snaps, embodying the new order of things, would be issued. In no school visited l had he been able to discover a barometer, thermometer, or rain gauge, necessary instruments for almost any school of practical geography. Every seliool hail open- to it a magnificent field for observational geography and general Nature study, but the printed pages seemed to have a greater fascination ■for teachers than the book ot Nature. To help to remedy this he had almost completed arrangements for the calling together of teachers for mutual discussion and demonstration-,''.-but- owing to railway restrictions such would not now be possible.
