This stoty might tax somebody's credulity, but it has the saving grace of being true (says the Manawatu Times). Last week the secretary of the Manawatu Patriotic Society read a reply-paid telegram informing him that the sender, a returned soldier, was at Levin seeing a doctor, and asking that the price of his train fare be sent down to Levin so that he could travel to Koputaroa. The Mayor of Palmerston North, in relating theli incident recently, said that the secretary made inquiries' and found that the train fare was the large sum of Bd. The telegram cost Is 4d. And the man could have walked the distance whilst waiting for a reply. That the unprotected flame of the match or candle and the carelessly dropped lighted match have been the cause of many serious fires is an indisputable fact. Far safer and more convenient is the electric pocket torch, which gives a bright white light by simply pressing the switch with the finger. A big shipment of the latest designs of these highly useful articles has just been received by Messrs W. A. Scott and Sons, the well-known Dunedin cycle firm. Those who have occasion to move about in the dark, or to rise during the night to minister to the baby or invalid, will be well advised to secure one.
