An Ashburton gentleman who recently visited Trentham Camp teiis a story illustrative of the tactics adopted by some anient, patriots who are keen to go on active service (says the Ashburtou Guardian). The gentleman in question • was chatting with a young soldier at the camp, when a member of the clerical military staff appeared with some documents in his hand. Addressing the soldier, he said: "I've got a man on my list here with the same name as yours. Is he any relation !'' The soldier read the particulars a newly-enlisted soldier had supplied to the recruiting ollicer, and, with a laugh, he said: " Why, that's my father.'' ''Well," replied the military man, "it's strange your father is only eight years older than you are!" j A novel suggestion for the utilising of land along railway lines is contained in a remit which comes from Te Puke for the annual farmers' conference (says the Auckland Star). It is as follows: "That with a view to minimising the risk of fires along railway lines, and also in assisting production, this- conference is of the opinion that, while the Public Works Department should take the usual width of land for railway construction purposes, only that portion required for the track should be fenced, the remainder to be utilised by the farmers,"
