PROGRESSION.

AN UP-TO-DATE GARAGE. Despite the far-reaching effects of the present world war which have been experienced to a considerable extent by many of the towns throughout the Dominion, Balelutha happily shows no visible signs of having felt the straiu. In fact, the whole district and the town itself appear to be enjoying a period of prosperity, anil business in general, notwithstanding the increased price of living, is in a nourishing condition. Vacant houses and shops are conspicuous by their absence, and building operations are progressing steadily. A noticeable feature is the commodious motor garage being erected for Messrs Bunten and Clarke. The garage, which is now almost ready for occupancy, is one of the largest, best appointed and most up-to-date in .South Otago and Southland. Brick cavity walls l(i inches in thickness surround the building, and the floor, which is of concrete, covers a space of !I0 feet by (ill feet, giving accommodation for ;">(> or (id cars nt the same time. To facilitate the work of repairing a large pit has been sunk in the floor, giving room for a mechanic to stand erect when working underneath a car. The drainage has received proper attention, a large drain running the length of the floor and emptying into a septic tank, and up-to-date lavatories have been installed with silent llushers. The showroom, which is 4li feet by :!•> feet, is nicely appointed, and is fronted by large windows eminently suitable for display purposes. Opposite the entrance to the showroom is the manager's ollice, and to the right is the accountant's ollice, both being nicely fitted and containing the latest style of fireplaces built of McSkimming and Son's patent well grates, a feature of which is obtaining the maximum amount of heat at the minimum amount of coal consumption. To the left-hand side of the showroom is a ladies' waiting-room, with lavatory attached. The entrance to the garage, which is 1:1 feel in width, is on the right-hand side of the building, and at, the rear of the main premises is extra accommodation for cars. The whole structure is one of the most up-to-date of its kind, and is a tribute to ellieient workmanship of the contractors, .Messrs .McDonald Bros., of Dunedin.
