LIQUOR CASKS

tfait, trading as Simpson and Hart* Lawrence, for failing (o furnish to the clerk ot the Magistrate's Court. Balelutha, a statement in writing of u quantity of liquor sent to Owaka - Constable Lopdell explained that a notice had been received saying that t ease of beer had been sent, but this did not meet the requirements of the Act in stating the quantity, as a case was not a definite quantity .-Mr R. ,R Grigor, who appeared for defendants] pleaded guilty, and said that the linn had regarded a case as a definite quantity, but the court having decided that such notification was not sufficient, hu had been instructed to admit the oli'ence. He asked for mitigation, as there hud been no intention to evade the law —Fined 10/ and costs.

Andrew Weir. Halclutha. was chargI ed with procuring liquor without stat/ing his name and address.—Mr R. JR. Grigor for defendant pleaded guiltv.— Constable Lopdell stated that defendant ordered two galloTjs.;o,fibner to be delivered in the name of another man, and he further signed the order "in the name of another (a second) man, both of whom were acquaintances of his and residents of Balclutha. The man in whose name the liquor came knew nothing of the transaction, the other' man had given permission for his name to be used, and concurred in the offence. When approached, defendant was frank and honest in his admission. His relatives were unsympathetic with the use of liquor, and he did not want his name ideutiiied with procuring it. Tie procured the liquor , for himself.—For the defence Mr (iriI gor said the whole transaction was j foolish, and he 'asked the court to take that view of it. Defendant . was ' not associated with a keg party, but I he did not want his relatives to'know 'that he had procured liquor, as he ' had never done so before in a No-li- ; cense district. He had ;been ordered liquor for his health, and in this case he thought he would try if a glass of beer would do him any good.— His Worship said this was a most reprehensible transaction, and a serious offence under the Licensing Act. but in view of what hud been said by the defence and concurred in by the police, and taking into consideration the circumstances of defendant, he would take a lenient view of the case. Fined £l, and costs 7/-.

LICK ON SHEEP. On the information of Thos, C*il~ mour (Stock Inspector),' Peter Brand, Greenlield, was charged with being the owner of certain sheep afflicted with lice, which he exposed for sale in the Corporation Yards, Balelutha.-Thos. Gilmour explained the circumstances of the case. Defendant pleaded guilty and was lined £2 and costs '7/-.

CIVIL CASE. Thoß. Latta v. W. T. Brown, claim £4 10/.—Mr R. It. Stewart for plaintiff. Judgment by default for amount claimed, with costs 13/.
