OWAKA VALLEY HALL.

To the Editor. Sir,—J notice in your last issue of the Clutha Leader that the Tahatika correspondent seems to be greatly concerned about the Public Hall that is to be erected in the district. Perhaps, Sir, I might enlighten a few iu the district about the matter. This is a sort of business that always falls here to a lot of criticism. Some live months ago I believe that several meetings were held at Tahatika for the purpose of trying to get a public) hall built. A committee was elected to canvass the districts of Tahatika, Purekireki, Owaka Valley, and Owaka, and no less than seven gentlemen were appointed canvassing agents. And the result is that two willing members started out to try their luck, which ended in the two securing about £1 and £2 10/ resrecthely. Tho other five have not started yet, and we are almost inlo another year—l9ll ; yet your Tahatika correspondent states that they had to stop operations owing to it being a busy time. This does not say much for the smartness of some people in getting through their farm .duties, etc., if it takes five months-for some of them to think of getting a start to canvass the district. Surely they should make promising members when they make a start to build the hall to suit, the Tahatika and Purekireki residents. I think a few of them might do worse than take a leaf out of the gentleman's book who canvassed the districts a few weeks ago, and has been promised by residents up to date close on £IOO. This itself speaks volumes for the Owaka Valley gentleman who | so kindly canvassed tho four districts, j and seeing that the hall is to be built I jusl exactly one mile from Tahatika | School, five miles from Purekireki, and .eight miles from Owaka, I think, seeling that this is only a scattered district, that each and every person, in- | stead of disputing the business should ibe extremely pleased, and not "get | over tho traces because the hall into I was choflon one mile from Tahatika.— II am. etc., FAIR PLAY,
