WAIPAHI.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) We have had another taste of winter after a few weeks of good dry weather. The rain was very acceptable, as tank water was beginning to get scarce. Before the cold snap came young pasture showed that a good growth had set in. If frost keeps away I fancy the growth will continue, as the ground is still dry and warm. Most fanners have started ploughing lea. ]n some instances the ground is very hard, and is pretty rough on horses and plough. lint lea land that is ploughed now has a longtime to lie turned, up to winter weather, and it will work down well when the time comes. Lambs are principally the only sheep that are being turnip-fed as yet. most people preferring to keep their ewes olf for another month or so. Turnip crops around this district on the whole , are very fair considering the dryness of the season. and most people will have enough for their own requirements-. Rabbit trapping re-opened again on the 7th, but the catches have fallen oIT considerably. Some trappers are sk lining, others sending to the freezing works. 1 don't know which will pay best, probably the sUiK-s according to the reports of the skin market, but there is a little more work attached to skinning. However, bunny will be pretty scarce by the time trapping and poisoning arc finished. The concert that was to take place in aid of the Hall Improvement Fund on Friday ("20 th) is postponed till the 27th inst.. caving to the late King's funeral falling on that date. The public hall is badly wanting some external repairs, and the funds from the forthcoming concert arc to be spent for that purpose. The (Hugo Winter Show- will soon be round again, and there will be the usual contingent of country people there to see what is to be seen, notwithstanding drv season and all. May 17tli.'l!H'0.
