STATUTOBY MEETING. C.R. GUMMING ELECTED CHAIRMAN. The statutory meeting of the Clutha. . County Council for the election oil chairman was "held at the County Chambers at noon on Wednesday, Present—Councillors .J'no. Edwards, J. It. Mitchell, W. flay, Jno. Clarke, I). A. McLachlan, A. C. Saunders,. \V. Quin, \\\ Nieol, and James Gumming. The clerk, Mr A. McDonald, presided, and, having explained the purpose of the meeting, asked for nominations. Mr lN'ieol said lie had pleasure in proposing Mr Gumming'. Mr dimming stood down in the speaker's favour last year, when .he was as much entitled to the position as hd (Mr Nieol) was. Mr Gumming had been a v<;vy good councillor, and the speaker had not the least doubt he would prove a very good chairman. Mr McLachlan seconded the motion, agreeing with the chairman that Mr Gumming had made a good councillor, and that he would make a good chairman.

Mr Quin supported the motion". There being no further nominations, Mr Gumming was unanimously elected.

Mr Gumming, on taking the chair, thanked councillors for electing him to the honourable and responsible position. lie would do his best to carry out the duties of the olliee to the best of his ability.--(Applause.)
