BALCLUTHA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

ANNUAL SOCTAL. • The annual social in connection with the above church was held in the Oddfellows' Hall on Wednesday evening, and proved to be a most interesting and enjoyable event. The night being fine a large number were present from the country districts, and a goodly number of representatives of other denominations were present. Proceedings opened with a 'hymn by the choir under the baton of Mr G. H. Reid, Mrs Grigor pres d.ing at. the organ. The Rev. S; W. Currie, in the course of a few opening- remarks, stated that he greatly- regretted being unable t® submi: church reports for the ye-' ar, as, owing to the distance of l)r. Sidey, the Church Treasurer, the receipts had apt come to hand He assured them, however, that they would be forthcoming in the course' of a few daj f s.' Another item having been rendered by the choir Mr Currie introduced the Rev. F. W. Boreham, of Mosgiel, who, Mr Currie announced, proposed to bring his audience for a trip to England.and Scotland by means of,lanterns views, accompanied by a descriptive lecture, and in. this. Mr ljoreham- succeeded admirably. From the moment that the first picture was thrown on the screen, until the last view had been shown, a period of nearly two hours, Mr Boreham's audience sat in wrapt attention. The various pictures thrown on the screen, representing historical seenes, events, etc., in Great Britain being greatly appscciated by the audience, while the splendidly descriptive and explanatory remarks by Mr Boreham as each picture was exhibited, madd the time pass all too soon, and the audience must have felt sorry in one sense , when Mr Boreham brought them back almost to their own doors by throwing on the town of Mosgiel. It is a far cry from Edinburgh topn to Balclutha, but it is safe to say that a large number of Balclutha people spent a considerable time in imagination in Edinburgh on Wednesday evening. At the conclusion of his lecture Mr Boreham was warmly applauded. During an interval refreshments, provided in abundance by the ladies of the congregation, were handed round and greatly appreciated. Votes of thanks were accorded, to those ladies who had helped to make the affair a success, Mr Boreham, Mr Hnll (of Stirling, who skilfully manipulated the magic lantern), and to the choir, the magic lantern, and to the choir, by Messrs T. A. Johnston, W. McElrea and C. Dallas.

The proceedings terminated with the benediction.
