MISCELLANEOUS.
Mr Cecil Khodes entertained Lord Roberts at Kimberley. The army estimates provide for 430,000 men and an expenditure of L61, 499,400. The Knight Templar, with the Third Contingent, arrived at Albany on Saturday. Her troops are in good condition, and only one horse was lost. Mafeking repulsed a fierce assault on the 18th February. The Boers lost 40 and the British three. Thirty-eight thousand reinforcements will arrive at the Cape in March and 18,000 in April. It is declared at Brussels that Joubert is concentrating 50,000 men at Winburg, where the country is similar to that round Ladysmith. Lord Roberts has reached Osfontein, six miles east of Paardeberg. Five thousand Boers have assembled four miles further east. ! President Kruger has left Pretoria to confer with President Steyn. Many believe this a preliminary to make overtures for peace. The British troops at Arundel are preparing for a rapid advance to the north. Lord Ranfurly has received the following cable from the Queen: —"Thanks to the people of New Zealand for their loyal and sympathetic congratulations on the relief of Ladysmith."
