CLUTHA BELIEF FUND.
The IVffiypr said that the statutory business being over he desired to bring under the notice of councillors the Meeting called for that afternoon with reference to the -relief of those who.had suffered damage by the recent' flood in the river. He hoped the council would co-operate and give that object their, hearty support, Ha understood there was still a considerable balance of the old Clutha Relief Fund in the hands of trustees in Duneclin and he thought it ought to be applied ■ to the reljet of the present sufferer^. }f the council agreed with him in this he would move that the trustees be requested to enquire' regarding the damage sustained by settlers from the recent flood and afford them relief . out of the fund in their hands ; also' that the County Councils of Clutha and Bruce and the Borough Council of Kaitangata be asked to co-oper-ate in the matter. . ' Mr Stewart had great pleasure io sepqndnig the motion and said the money had now been in the hands of the trustees for nearly twenty years.- ■An inquiry should be made anil claims sent in and no doubt the ■ trustee's would meet these claims fairly. • | Mi- M; Oar-ley sain] he hao" written to the trustees sometime ago as to this fund but had received no reply. Mr Dunne said, that no doubt much damage had been done by the flood and those who suffered were entitled to relief from the fund. The council as the local body should fyaoertain the damage and forward qlaims to the trustees ■vyith a recommendation that they be granted. Mr Ramage supported the motion. Mr M/Corley $u«g.gesteci that the €)lerls should write to the trustees regarding the matter, and failing a satisfactory reply that be should communicate with Messrs Thomson and Allen, M.H.B's., with a view to a bill beiflg passed before \he ciqse of the session applying the fund in the hands of the trustees towards relief of sufferers by the recent flood. He thought the borough council should have control of the fund. The motion was carried and Mr Stewart was appointed p. delegate to wait on the trustees on -the subject, The Mayor was appointed a delegate to attend the meeting that aiternoon.
